Memorial Day Celebration Of All
Who Give Us Our Freedom

By Nancy Canfield
Blog: RB Historical Society

“The day began with dismal doubt, a stubborn thing to put to rout” but the legion of volunteers at the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society third annual Pancake Festival were undaunted by rain clouds. Tables and chairs were festooned with bright tablecloths, pinwheels, flags and balloons. The Rancho Bernardo Kiwanis fired up the grills, raffle prizes adorned table after table, and there was no option for yesterday’s unexpected rain.

The Dixie Strutters arrived and set up their band. Along came Jack Mitchell, trumpeter extraordinaire, to open the ceremonies with the Stars Spangled Banner. The guest of honor, Abe Baum arrived next: American hero of World War II, 4th Armored Division, awarded two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars, four Purple Hearts, and the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest U.S. military decoration, and author of the book RAID!

As MC for the day, Nancy Canfield, fundraising chair and Vice President of the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society (RBHS), gave a brief history of the Society’s quest to build a new museum for Rancho Bernardo, to preserve it’s long history, dating back to the Spanish Land Grants of 1769. Groundbreaking at the Bernardo Winery, took place in March, and construction is expected to begin August 1, 2008, with completion by year’s end. Oh, then “What larks!”

Twilight Concert On The Green

By Nancy Canfield
Blog: RB Historical Society

Do the words Concert On The Green evoke memories of hiking across the verdant lawn of the RB Inn, spreading out that Chenille Bedspread for all your family to tumble about on, picnic hampers full of cold chicken and salads, fireworks cascading overhead? Lots of us share those memories of soft summer nights, and simpler times. For over two decades, until 1992, those concerts grew from a few hundred people to 10,000. The Symphony on the Green became the Concert on the Green, as local talent in the beginning, expanded to the likes of Doc Sevrensin, Patty Page, Mel Torme and Bob Hope, the final performer in 1992.

Naturally, the cost escalated too. So many people have wished aloud that those days could return, that the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society thought we’d take a stab at bringing back as much of the look and feel of those early days, as possible, while raising some money to build a museum to house Rancho Bernardo’s rich history. But, we can’t begin where the old days left off. Like those early pioneers, we have to start small, and build upon our success. We ask our community’s understanding and patience as we grow.

How to Get (and keep) Your Kids
Active This Summer

By Dona Wilson
Fitness Together Rancho Bernardo
Blog: RB Fitness

We don’t need mounds of research and piles of statistics to tell us that childhood obesity is on the rise. With advancements in technology growing everyday, our kids are plugged in, tuned out and logged on to play Halo 3. More and more we, and our children, have slowly become inactive and in need of structured active time – and summer is no different.

Dona Wilson, local fitness expert and owner of one-on-one private personal training studio Fitness Together Rancho Bernardo and Escondido, adamantly agrees. “Yes, we are busy, and yes, our kids do need a break from school and homework this summer, but that doesn’t mean they need to turn into couch potatoes. After all, recess and play were invented as a fun break from the mental labor of school. With this mindset, helping your kids get active this summer can be fun, not arduous,” remarks Dona.
