Twilight Concert On The Green

By Nancy Canfield
Blog: RB Historical Society

Do the words Concert On The Green evoke memories of hiking across the verdant lawn of the RB Inn, spreading out that Chenille Bedspread for all your family to tumble about on, picnic hampers full of cold chicken and salads, fireworks cascading overhead? Lots of us share those memories of soft summer nights, and simpler times. For over two decades, until 1992, those concerts grew from a few hundred people to 10,000. The Symphony on the Green became the Concert on the Green, as local talent in the beginning, expanded to the likes of Doc Sevrensin, Patty Page, Mel Torme and Bob Hope, the final performer in 1992.

Naturally, the cost escalated too. So many people have wished aloud that those days could return, that the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society thought we’d take a stab at bringing back as much of the look and feel of those early days, as possible, while raising some money to build a museum to house Rancho Bernardo’s rich history. But, we can’t begin where the old days left off. Like those early pioneers, we have to start small, and build upon our success. We ask our community’s understanding and patience as we grow.

August 16, our second our concert at the Bernardo Winery, features renowned Sam Bass as our MC and the incomparable Big Daddy Orchestra – they’ll even be a dance floor, so plan to cut a rug.

General admission is $20 and you can bring your own sand chair or blanket, better yet, buy a commemorative one to take home, for only $10. How about driving your golf cart over like in the old days? Orchestra Chair seating will be available for $40. Bring something to eat, or buy a box lunch or dine at the award winning Café Merlot. Or, why not get a group together and reserve one of the gazebos, which includes VIP dining provided by Café Merlot, wine, flavored coffees and desert, and a commemorative blanket all for $125 per person.

For more details, please visit our website at www.RBHistoricalSociety.org, or pick up an order form from the SD North Chamber of Commerce, Coldwell Bankers, Downey Savings, Prudential, RE Max, SD National Bank, or Village Mail and More. Tickets are selling fast, so get your seats now! And I’ll see you at twilight.
