Chula Vista renames park in honor of Kumeyaay

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) After a number of years of battling over a Chula Vista park, town has completed the renaming of Discovery Park to the Kumeyaay Park of Chula Vista.

Concord Sweetgrass, a Kumeyaay Nation Princess, says she was honored to be together with her folks to welcome everybody on the occasion to Kumeyaay land.

“We have now been right here since time in memorial, we’re the unique caretakers, and we are going to proceed to be the caretakers of this land,” Sweetgrass mentioned.

Vandals splashed purple paint over the Christopher Columbus monument, which prompted a contentious battle of what was then referred to as Discovery Park. Metropolis officers made the choice to honor the indigenous folks of the area as an alternative.
